We believe great gear should not only perform in demanding conditions, but also tell a story worth carrying forward.

We believe in performance you can trust, gear you can pass down, and a mission you can be proud to support.

The Story Behind Aquila

Long before a speargun ever took shape, there was the idea of precision, patience, and power — three qualities that define the perfect hunt beneath the surface. The eagle — Aquila in Latin — embodies those same instincts in the sky.

Like the eagle, a spearfisherman must wait for the perfect moment, steady in breath and focused in silence. The ocean becomes his sky, the fish his horizon. Every dive is a descent into stillness, and every shot is a test of discipline, instinct, and respect for life itself.

Aquila was born from that connection — between hunter and prey, sea and sky, instinct and intention.

Each speargun carries that spirit: hand-crafted, balanced, and forged not just for power, but for purpose.

The name honors more than the eagle’s strength. It represents clarity of vision, freedom from fear, and mastery through patience. In Roman times, the Aquila was the sacred standard of the legion — a symbol of loyalty, courage, and brotherhood. In the water, that same spirit lives on through every diver who carries one of our guns — united not by conquest, but by respect for the deep.

  • Midland, Michigan
    Riley Smith
Riley Smith – Midland, Michigan “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” The Lorax I am a Registered Nurse, Michigan National Guard service member, active member of Michigan Spearfishing Association, and I am the Captain of the only Great Lakes spearfishing charter. Driven by a passion for adventure, conservation, and education, I strive to showcase the incredible spearfishing opportunities found throughout the Great Lakes region. As a husband to my wife, Ashtyn, and father to our son, Elijah, family and service remain at the core of who I am. The Great Lakes contain over 99,000 square kilometers of Michigan waters alone, offering an environment that feels more like an inland ocean than a freshwater lake system. My mission is to expand awareness of Great Lakes spearfishing while helping grow the sport and outdoor community across Michigan and beyond.
  • Appleton Wisconsin
    Cal Straub
From Appleton, Wisconsin, Cal has been spearfishing for over 6 years, starting with 3-pronging panfish in Wisconsin’s inland lakes and eventually moving into the cold, clear waters of the Great Lakes. He regularly hunts species such as lake trout, walleye, and freshwater drum, and also spends time spearfishing in saltwater when traveling. Diving in low-visibility, cold-water environments has shaped his approach to gear, where reliability and maneuverability matter most. Cal is an active member of the National Freshwater Spearfishing Association (NFSA) and has contributed to the growth of the sport through photography, videography, events such as Freshwater Worlds, and helping manage NFSA media and social channels. Through @Base.camp.outdoors, he documents the reality of the outdoor lifestyle — from hunting and fishing to diving and exploration. Cal brings a dedicated freshwater perspective to the Aquila team and relies on his 120 cm Aquila Raptor and open-cell 5mm and 7mm Aquila wetsuits to perform in some of the most challenging spearfishing conditions in North America.
  • Playa del Carmen
    Ryan Thompson
I’m an adventurer at heart. After being a rock climber for almost 20 years, I moved down to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. There are no mountains here, so I tried freediving and really enjoyed it, but it felt like something was missing…a little edge… Then I went out spearfishing one time with a friend, and was absolutely hooked.
The very next day, I bought all the gear, and started going out every chance I got. I started dreaming about the ocean, spearfishing, and growing my skills to deeper depths, and larger fish. And now, I get to be part of Team Aquila – a purpose driven company that gives back proceeds from sales to help clean up the ocean that I’ve grown to love so much. I’m truly grateful.
  • Puerto Vallarta
    Zed Gonzalez
My journey began with an inexhaustible energy that led me to explore various sports. At 15, I found my first serious connection with the ocean through bodyboarding. However, a casual invitation to try spearfishing from a friend who lent me his equipment marked the turning point: from that first dive, I was captivated by the underwater world.
Today, spearfishing has transcended being a mere activity to become a practical philosophy. It’s about the law of attraction combined with respect for the sea, continuous improvement, and technical perfection, both in and out of the water. Now, I feel more motivated than ever to officially join the Aquila team.

    Roberto Diaz
Hello everyone, my name is Roberto, better known as “La Bota,” and I’d like to tell you how I discovered spearfishing. It all started in 2020, when COVID hit. For many people it was the worst time of their lives, but honestly, for me it was the best. And it was all thanks to a friend who introduced me to this beautiful sport that I can now call my job.
I’ve loved the ocean for as long as I can remember. I’ve always been a kid passionate about extreme sports, constantly looking for new ways to challenge myself. Surfing was, for a long time, the most extreme way I knew to live my life, until I discovered spearfishing, a sport that has pushed me to discover my limits like no other.
It all began when I was stuck at home like everyone else, on my phone all day. One day I saw a friend post a story saying he had gone to the ocean and the police hadn’t kicked him out. I asked him what he was doing. He replied, “Bro, I went fishing.” Curious, I asked, “But how? Didn’t the police see you?” He answered, “I was fishing under the sea.” Full of energy and curiosity, I asked him how that was even possible, and that’s when he explained what spearfishing was all about. I completely lost it when I heard his answer and asked if he could take me with him. Since he was already an expert, he said no.
I couldn’t hold myself back, so I decided to order my first speargun online. As a total beginner with no experience, I went out alone, not knowing the risks involved. I remember that day so clearly. I went to the beach by myself and decided to give it a shot. When I got home, super excited, I showed my mom what I had caught. She was confused about what kind of fish it was, and I told her they were mojarras. She was happy, not really knowing either, and started cooking them right away. When I finally tasted my fish, I realized it was terrible.
That’s when I went online to look up what I had actually caught. Turns out it was a fish you’re not supposed to eat. I laughed, but that moment pushed me to set goals and decide that I needed to get better at this sport. Today, I’m grateful to spearfishing for all the experiences, trips, friendships, and moments it has given me with the sea.

  • Playa del Carmen, Mexico
    Jano
I started swimming in the Caribbean Sea doing snorkeling, and combined with my passion for rod fishing, I became intrigued by the world of spearfishing. Local fishermen from Playa del Carmen taught me — they lent me all their gear, showed me how to use it, accompanied me, and took me to beautiful places selflessly, demonstrating the kindness and brotherhood that exist among those who love fishing.   Being part of Team Aquila motivates me to improve my spearfishing and freediving skills, and to create high-quality content for the enjoyment of other fishermen.
  • Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca
    Abisai (Abi) Ramos Sotelo

I first immersed myself in the world of fishing as a child, but it wasn’t until I was 17 that I tried spearfishing for the first time. I was immediately fascinated by the tranquility of the ocean and the challenge of hunting in the aquatic environment. My connection with the sea is one of profound respect, as I consider it my sacred place and my sustenance. What I love most is the ‘meditation in motion’ that each dive entails, where silence and intense focus are key to approaching the fish. I started out seeking self-sufficiency and a pure connection with nature, motivated by the idea of ethically and selectively obtaining my food; now, it is also my profession, and being part of Aquila is truly exciting.
